Avatar: The Way of Water crosses $1.89 billion worldwide and wins its fifth worldwide box office

Avatar: The Way of Water won its fifth global box office when it surpassed $1.89 billion worldwide and is now very close to becoming the sixth-biggest global release in history after Spider-Man: No Way Home’s $1.91 billion.

As Variety reports, Avatar: The Way of Water grossed $31.1 million in North America over the weekend and is expected to gross $38.5 million over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, which ends Monday, April 16 January includes.

In North America, Avatar: The Way of Water has grossed US$570 million and its international total has reached US$1.3 billion. As we’ve mentioned, any day it should overtake Spider-Man: No Way Home as the sixth-largest global release in history, and then target the $2.04 billion Avengers: Infinity War.

While Avatar had another strong showing, M3GAN continued to impress by taking second place with $17.9 million and an estimated $21.2 million over the entire holiday weekend. This was about a 40% drop from opening weekend, which is a really great stat, especially for a horror film.

Overseas, M3GAN raised an additional US$15.4 million to bring its global total to US$90 million.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish took third place with domestic $13.4 million, Tom Hanks’ A Man Called Otto opened domestically for a respectable $12.6 million and earned fourth place, and Gerard Butler’s Plane rounded out the top five with $10 million in its opening weekend.

In our review of A Man Called Otto, we said that it “may have a tearful performance by Tom Hanks, but there’s little else to elevate this simple story.”

In our review of Plane, we said, “With more tarpaulin than promised trailers, Gerard Butler Vehicle Plane ends up having a surprisingly good time.”
