Five people were killed Thursday on a residential sidewalk in Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina in the eastern United States. An off-duty police officer was also killed. Two other people, including a second officer, have been taken to hospital: the officer has been fired while the other person is in critical condition. The person suspected of shooting was found and arrested several hours later.

According to police reconstructions, a man described as a young white man began shooting around 5 p.m. along a promenade on the Neuse in a residential area in the north-east of the city. At the moment, his name and age have not been released, and the motivation for the gesture is not even known. Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin said the young man was arrested around 8 p.m. in a nearby residential area.

Both Baldwin and state Gov. Roy Cooper condemned the shooting, the latest in a series of violent events that have resulted in deaths across the country, including law enforcement officials, this week. Five people were killed in a shooting in South Carolina on Sunday, while two police officers were killed in what appeared to be an ambush in Bristol, Connecticut, on Wednesday night, according to initial reports. Also during the week, two other police officers were killed in Greenville, Mississippi, and Las Vegas, Nevada.
