A French woman born without a uterus was able to give birth to two children thanks to her own mother’s uterus, which was transplanted into her at the age of 36.
“It’s magical, it’s a bit second-hand,” joked Déborah Berlioz, whose children were carried in the same body that carried them, as well as her two brothers, as reported by TF1 last week.
At the age of 17, the French woman collapsed when she learned that she could not become a mother because she had no uterus.
But back then, Swedish research that allowed mice to give birth after a uterus transplant gave a glimmer of hope in the young woman, who then hoped science would see enough progress for herself, she told French media.
The pinnacle of happiness: at 36, she became the first French woman to receive a uterine transplant as part of a clinical trial carried out at the Foch hospital in Hauts-de-Seine, west of Paris. Moreover, it was his own mother who agreed to donate hers to him.
“Mom always told me […] “Don’t worry, I will always do whatever it takes to keep my uterus healthy,” she said. For her it was instinctive.
Today the new mother of two little girls can consider herself lucky.
“It’s a miracle,” she said, touched.
To avoid Ms Belrioz having to continue her anti-rejection treatment, the organ will be removed.
