The Montreal Alouettes released running back William Stanback on Tuesday.
The 29-year-old American's contract expired in 2023, meaning he could have become a free agent on February 13. By releasing him early, the Als are giving him more time to find a new formation.

“We would like to thank William for the service he has provided to our team,” Danny Maciocia, general manager of Alouettes, said in a press release. After several meetings, William and his group wanted a release before the free agent market began. We have agreed to accommodate him and wish him the best of luck for the future.”
Stanback joined the Montreal organization in 2018. He was named Eastern Division MVP in 2021, the year he led the Canadian Football League (CFL) in rushing yards (1,176). The running back was named to the Ambrosie Tour All-Star team twice (2019 and 2021) and won the Gray Cup last year.
In 62 career CFL games, Stanback has rushed for 3,716 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also caught 142 passes for 1,058 yards and four majors.
He was the highest-paid running back in Canadian racing in 2023, according to 3DownNation.com. He would have received around $160,000. Stanbank experienced a sharp decline in its production. The one who managed more than 1,000 yards on the ground in 2019 and 2021 was limited to 800 yards in 2023. He crossed the goal line twice on the ground and again on an aerial play.
On his social media, Stanback wrote a message thanking the Alouettes organization and its fans.
“When I arrived here as a recruit six years ago, I never imagined that the city would so quickly become my second home,” he wrote. […] My biggest thanks go to everyone who believed in me, supported me and made my time here an unforgettable experience. My time here has had a huge impact on me and allowed me to grow as a person and player.”
