At least seven dead after storms in South Korea

At least seven people have died in South Korea after heavy rains and flooding. According to local media reports on Saturday, another three people were also missing. The number of victims could still rise. Thousands of people had to be evacuated. Prime Minister Han Duck-soo called on the military to help with the rescue work.

Torrential rain triggered 10 mudslides and temporary power outages in 13 parts of the country on Saturday night. In the central district of Goesan alone, nearly 7,000 residents had to be evacuated after a local dam overflowed. According to media reports, seven injuries were also reported.

The situation remained tense. The meteorological office announced heavy and persistent rains in large parts of the country. South Korea is currently in the summer rainy season, during which regular flooding occurs.
