Attack on the Capitol: Seven years in prison for ‘one of the most violent and aggressive’

One of the “most violent and aggressive” protesters during the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol was sentenced to more than seven years in prison on Thursday.

According to CBS News, 39-year-old Kyle Fitzsimons committed no fewer than five attacks in 10 minutes, authorities said.

He was found guilty on 11 charges last September, but today he was sentenced to more than seven years in prison.

Among his victims is Capitol Police Sergeant Aquilino Gonell.

The officer suffered permanent shoulder injuries.

“He ended my career in law enforcement. Because of my injuries, I can no longer do the work I have loved and been trained to do all my life. Also, do not accept the promotion to lieutenant that I prepared and received through my recovery. It changed my life for the worse and I may never fully recover from it,” the former police officer wrote in a victim impact statement.

The latter, who also demanded the maximum penalty for his attacker, was present at the verdict, reported the CBS-affiliated chain WABI.
