Black ice: a serious risk – MétéoMédia

The models are expecting a little icy episode. However, there is a risk that should not be overlooked. Forecast.

Freezing rain

The expected icy episode in Quebec will begin with an initial eruption by Thursday morning. At around ten millimeters, the areas west of Montreal will be hardest hit. Like Montérégie, the metropolis could receive five. In the north of the island, a demarcation line will be drawn in the Saint-Jérôme sector. The Laurentians should therefore avoid icy conditions.

RISK1RISK1

Minor glaze

Models suggest the initial pulse of this icy episode will be minor. Since quantities of more than 10 mm are not to be expected, the thickness of the ice may occasionally lead to power outages or traffic accidents due to icy roads.

RISK2RISK2

Associated risks

This black ice will undoubtedly have consequences in southwest Quebec. The risk of power outages remains limited due to the weak winds. Additionally, ice accumulation should not be enough to break tree branches or damage infrastructure. School closures are possible, but still unlikely. The main danger associated with this icy episode: the roads and sidewalks. Be very careful if you have to go out early Thursday morning.

RISK3RISK3

Occasional failures

Power outages could occur, although the risk is low. They would be isolated and possible in areas west of the Greater Montreal area. This is where ice accumulation will be heaviest.
