Brazilian artist Gil Marcel has accused Paramount of plagiarizing one of his designs on the new poster for the movie Scream VI. Gil shared a statement on his social networks this Monday (2), revealing his surprise at identifying very similar characteristics with his project, released a month before the horror film’s recent release.
“On January 1st, 2022, I received the news with surprise that the studio responsible for marketing ‘Scream VI’ has released a new teaser poster. Several users on Twitter and Instagram who had already liked and shared my art, which was published on 12/03/21, pointed out that the art on the poster bears several similarities to my work,” the illustrator began, even stating that it arrived to mark the studio’s accounts when he published the work.

The designer explained that the similarities between the projects start with the artistic concept: a map of subway lines showing information from the five previous films, broken down by color. “Even the recognizable visual shapes of the franchise for me, the terrain is in the shape of Ghostface’s mask, and the subway lines reinforce the outline and relief of the mask and establish the relationships between the lines/movies; while in the official published graphic, the subway lines draw the outline of the mask,” Macel described.
He continued: “I’m not saying here that there was plagiarism (or that there wasn’t one), it’s just a matter of checking how similar the two pieces are on several levels and aspects, which rules out the possibility of that.” say would just be pure coincidence or an odd case of random creative decisions during a marketing campaign. Also, at no time do I question the quality of the work of the professional responsible for the piece. It’s not about which visual design is better.”

Then the artist explained that he has not received any contact from representatives of the film or the studio so far, but he emphasized that he remains open to dialogue. “As a fan, I love that my work is shared and I’m still excited about the campaign for the sixth film but as a professional, I’m still deeply disappointed by what happened,” he wrote, asking for help , so that others can share the testimony.
He concluded, “As a screenwriter, designer, and artist, I continue to create in the hope that our art will not only be admired, but also given due recognition.” Check it out in full and compare the images below:

The new film in the horror franchise, starring Jenna Ortega and climaxing with Wandinha, hits theaters worldwide on March 10, 2023. The production also marks the return of other popular names from audiences. Courteney Cox and Hayden Panettiere will reprise their roles as Gale Weathers and Kirby Reed, respectively. Samara Weaving, Dermot Mulroney, Tony Revolori and Josh Segarra complete the cast.
Despite the successful names, Neve Campbell, the famous Sidney, confirmed she won’t be taking part in the sequence because of the salary. “As a woman, I’ve always worked very hard to prove my worth, especially when it comes to ‘Scream.’ I felt that the offer presented did not match the value I had delivered to the franchise.” Check out the trailer:
