Unions accuse Lufthansa's Belgian subsidiary of not adjusting additional salary benefits for inflation as required by law.
Pilots at Lufthansa's Belgian subsidiary, Brussels Airlines, announced a 24-hour strike for Saturday. The industrial action will begin at 5am on Saturday, a spokesperson for the BBTK union told the Belgian news agency. According to the airline, it was initially impossible to predict how many passengers would be affected.
The strike is supported by three unions, said BBTK spokesman Olivier van Camp. They accuse Brussels Airlines of not adjusting additional salary benefits for inflation, as required by law. A court ruled in favor of the unions and the airline wants to appeal the decision.
“A strike is not a solution”
“A strike is not a solution,” the company said on Friday, calling on unions to return to the negotiating table. Brussels Airlines has been an integral part of the Lufthansa Group since 2017 and operates around 40 aircraft, which take off mainly from Brussels Zaventem Airport.
According to a “Spiegel” report, there is also a threat of strikes at Lufthansa subsidiary Discover Airlines. The board of the pilots' union Cockpit Association (VC) will therefore discuss a corresponding vote on Saturday. The vote would then be held next week, support for the strikes was considered high and a resolution had already been approved by the collective bargaining committee for industrial action, the magazine reported, referring to the VC environment.
