San Juan, 22nd May (EFE).- The heads of government of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) will meet this Sunday to decide for the third and possibly final time whether, under pressure from the US, they can hold the IX. America Summit or not to drop the boycott idea.

The Caricom Secretariat has advised its members to ignore any attempt by US President Joe Biden’s administration to exclude Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela from the event, which will be held in Los Angeles in June.

The controversy stems from the possibility of Biden inviting Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó to the event instead of the country’s President Nicolás Maduro.

“This must be a deception for Caricom, as well as for the rest of Latin American countries,” stresses an internal document being debated today and prepared by analysts.

The United States, which will organize the summit, which will take place in Los Angeles from June 6 to 10, recognizes Guaidó as President of Venezuela, a decision that contradicts that of Caricom.

The US State Department confirmed a few days ago that it is excluding Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela from the next Americas summit because they “do not respect” democracy.

Antigua and Barbuda and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines have already announced that they will not accept the invitation to Guaidó and will skip the President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel.

Caricom leaders have in the past reiterated their position of non-interference in Venezuela’s internal affairs and said they were ready to mediate in the process leading to a peaceful resolution of the crisis.

This is the first time since the original Miami edition in 1994 that the United States has organized the Summit of the Americas, which occurs every three or four years. EFE
