Cinema: Dua Lipa, Claudia Schiffer's cat and the Beatles in “Argylle”, spy comedy

Pop star Dua Lipa, cat of supermodel Claudia Schiffer, icon of the 1990s, last title of the Beatles: Matthew Vaughn, director of Kick ass and films KingmanHe pulled out all the stops for the spy comedy Argyle.

This 2h19 parody co-produced by Apple, whose budget according to the American press exceeds $200 million, will be released in cinemas in France on Wednesday and in the United States on Friday.

After developing a three-volume spy comedy franchise with “Kingsman,” the British director gives this new film a feminine touch – à la Barbie. The virilism of the spies, played by Sam Rockwell, Henry Cavill and Samuel L. Jackson, takes its toll.

“You know [Matthew Vaughn] makes films like this, people love it, they should watch this film. It's really focused on women, incredible, they're going to love it,” Samuel L. Jackson told AFP at the premiere in London on Wednesday.

Argylle chronicles the misadventures of best-selling spy thriller author Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard).

Elly isn't really a go-getter, but rather the type of person who writes her books wrapped in a blanket, with a cat on her lap. But reality surpasses fiction when she becomes embroiled in an intrigue with real secret agents… and her faithful companion is carried around in a porthole backpack.

The film hoped to create an event with Dua Lipa's first theatrical appearance. Miss: Barbie, in which she also appears, was filmed afterward but ultimately released beforehand. The production takes comfort in the screen debut of Alfie, the cat owned by Claudia Schiffer, the director's wife.

All packaged in a prestigious soundtrack: the final Beatles track Now and Then, which remained unreleased until its release last year.

The release of the film is accompanied by a marketing campaign: JC Lattès Editions have just released the spy thriller Argylle, signed by an unknown author, Elly Conway, about whom nothing is known. The work is said to come from the heroine of the film.

A female cat (a Scottish Fold) and many secrets: that was enough to capture the imagination of the “Swifties”, the community of admirers of the music star Taylor Swift, who were convinced through social networks that their idol was hiding behind the pseudonym Elly Conway. A theory that has since been refuted by the director.
