Gladys Bejerano Portela, Comptroller of the Republic, reiterated Cuba's commitment to preventing and combating corruption as a priority for the State, the Government, the people and the principles they represent.

Bejerano Portela, Head of the Antillean delegation present at the tenth session of the Conference of States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption in Atlanta, United States (USA), reiterated the importance of solving the global structural causes of corruption, the crimes such as B. promote bribery, money laundering and the transfer of assets of illegal origin.

The official noted that the Cuban State is making efforts to raise awareness of the need to combat this phenomenon in a comprehensive manner, involving all actors in society, especially civil society, academia, trade unions and the population.

“We firmly believe that civil servants and managers must be role models for the people they serve and that their behavior must make a positive contribution to building the society that we want to build and that we want to leave to our children,” emphasized he.

Bejerano Portela explained that the country pays particular attention to international cooperation and the signing of bilateral agreements of mutual assistance, as well as with the relevant international organizations, to counteract this phenomenon.

He denounced that the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on the island by the United States more than 60 years ago represents the main obstacle to the economic and social development of my country and a massive and flagrant violation of the human rights of all Cubans and Cubans.

The event runs until December 15 and focuses on topics such as reviewing the implementation of the Convention, asset recovery, international cooperation, prevention, technical assistance and the follow-up to the special session of the General Assembly on the challenges and measures to prevent corruption and combat and strengthen international cooperation.
