“Democracy has gone into reverse in most parts of the world in 2023,” says the website Democracy Index 2023produced by The Economist magazine and published this week.
Only according to this year's edition 7.8% of the world population lives in 24 countries that are considered “full democracies.” 39.4% of the world population lives in 59 countries with “authoritarian regimes”.
The average score for democracy in Planet fell from 5.29 to 5.23 last yearthe worst result in 18 years, confirming what the report states as “a trend of regression and stagnation in recent years”.
The list is headed by the same six nations as last year: Norway, New Zealand, Iceland, Sweden, Finland and Denmark All score above 9.2 (on a scale of 10), reflecting good results in electoral plurality, popular participation, government functioning, political culture and civil liberties.
In America there is only that Canada, Costa Rica and that Uruguay have the definition of “full democracy” by the Index. Brazil ranks 51st on the list, with enviable results in the electoral process (9.58) but poor results when it comes to government functioning and political culture (score 5). Our average is 6.68.
