There were harrowing scenes that took place on the Ionian coast of Calabria on Sunday morning. The bodies of around thirty drowned migrants lay on the long sandy beach of Cutro in the province of Crotone – among the wooden planks of their fishing trawler, orange life jackets and wreckage. Children and a newborn baby were also among the dead. Red Cross workers and police recovered the bodies and took them a few meters from the surf. They put them on the sand and packed them in white body bags. The local priest blessed the dead while they were still on the beach. As of Sunday night, rescue teams had recovered a total of 58 bodies.
