It's been four years since Dua Lipa released her successful second album, Future Nostalgia, and over the past few months, the Grammy-winning singer has been laying the foundation for her next era. In November, she released “Houdini,” the lead single from her upcoming third LP, and the album’s latest taster, “Training Season,” is out today.
Lipa first teased “Training Season” during her performance at the Grammys earlier this month. The track, like “Houdini,” was produced by Tame Impala’s Danny L. Harle and Kevin Parker. The song and accompanying video are inspired by the pitfalls of dating, as Lipa sings about wanting a partner who will lift her up more than she's ever felt before. “Need someone to hold me tight / Deeper than I've ever known / Whose love feels like a rodeo / Knows just how to take control,” she sings on the chorus.
The song actually came about after some real life problems. “I've been on a string of bad dates and the last one was the final straw,” Dua said in a statement on the track. “The next morning I arrived at the studio [co-writers] Caroline [Ailin] and Tobias [Jesso] Wondering how everything went, I immediately declared, “Training season is over,” and like the best “Day After” debriefs with your buddies, we laughed a lot and everything quickly fell into place there.
“While it's obviously about the feeling when you're just tired of telling people – in this case specifically men – how to date you properly, it's also about the fact that my training season is over and I'm dating everyone Experience grows,” she added. “I've never felt so confident, clear and empowered.” And even though the training season isn't over for any of us, you start to realize how nice it is to find the person to experience it with. They stop looking for trainees and are more interested in having someone at your side with whom you can develop.”
