Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk and musician Grimes welcomed their second child, a girl they named Exa Dark Siderel Musk, although her parents mostly call her I.

Grimes, 33, said the baby was born in December in an interview published on Thursday by Vanity Fair. The press followed closely the birth of their first child, a boy born in May 2020, due in part to the choice of name: X Æ A-12, or more simply X.

Elon Musk — the head of Tesla and SpaceX and currently the world’s richest man — announced last fall that he was “semi-divorced” from the singer.

“I would probably call him my boyfriend, but we are very mobile,” Grimes told Vanity Fair. “We see each other all the time … We just have our own things to do and I don’t expect other people to understand that,” she said. Grimes said she and Musk plan to have more children: “We’ve always wanted at least three or four,” she said.

Grimes explained that the name Exa Dark Sideæl includes several references to space and technology: she said that Exa refers to supercomputers; Sideræl, a more “elvish” spelling of starry – the word means involving distant stars – and Dark for “unknown”.

“Dark matter is a beautiful mystery of our universe,” Grimes said, not ruling out that her daughter might want to change her name in the future.

Grimes also said she hopes to keep her daughter out of the public eye. “The best situation here is when I train a girl and he trains a boy,” she told Vanity Fair at her home in Austin, Texas.

Twitter has once again been inundated with tweets about the name, although it may be less shocking than X Æ A-12.
