Explosion leaves several injured in Seychelles

An explosion left several people injured and put the Seychelles under a state of emergency this Thursday (7). The country’s government has issued a warning that people should stay at home. The archipelago also suffers from floods.

According to local press, at least 100 people were injured by the explosion and flooding.

The Seychelles President’s Office said the incident occurred at an explosives warehouse and caused extensive damage in the Providence industrial zone.

Images circulating on social media show several properties destroyed or damaged. Local media reported that the international airport was also affected.

“Everyone is asked to stay at home. All schools will be closed. Only essential service workers and travelers can move freely,” the government published.

According to the police, two police officers were among the injured and were rescued in serious condition. There was no official death toll as of the publication of this report.

All police officers who were not on duty were called into action. Security forces advised people not to approach the blast area.

The Seychelles is an archipelago consisting of 115 islands. Located near the east coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean, the country welcomes thousands of tourists every year in search of paradisiacal beaches.
