Florida journalist Dylan Lyons’ colleagues burst into tears as they report on his death

The heartbroken colleagues of the Florida journalist who was shot dead while covering a murder broke down in tears as he reported his death last night.

Spectrum 13 News reporter Dylan Lyons was shot and killed in his unmarked car at around 4.05pm yesterday.

He was on the ground in Pine Hills, near Orlando, to report the murder of Nathacha Augustin, a 38-year-old woman who was killed in a car around 11 a.m.

A new arrest affidavit reveals she was in the passenger seat of a friend’s car when the friend saw suspect Keith Melvin Moses walking down the street and looking “down”.

He offered him a ride and Moses climbed into the back seat but then shot Augustin in the chin and fled.

Local reporter Lyons and his cameraman Jesse Walden flocked to the scene of this shooting and prepared to cover it for their night shift.

Moses is then accused of returning to the scene of the crime, shooting her and then nine-year-old girl T’Yonna Major.

He didn’t know this girl, her mother or any of the journalists. Lyons, a 24-year-old reporter who was due to marry, died from his injuries. Walden remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Last night, WESH 2 News reporter Luana Munoz cried while reporting from the hospital where Lyons was confirmed dead.

‘I apologize. That’s really hard to cover. It’s very emotional here…

“There are people here who knew that the reporter, his fiancé and I just hugged.

“It’s every reporter’s worst nightmare. We go home at night and we are afraid that something like this will happen. One of us just passed by. I’m sending it back to you so I can pull myself together.”

Lyons’ colleagues at Spectrum News 13 also paid tribute to him on-air.

“He took his job very seriously, he loved his career, he loved what he did.

“He loved the community, telling people’s stories and breaking news. He was just passionate about what he was doing.

“After he left the news network, he was still talking about how badly he wanted to succeed. Very close with his mother too,” said his colleague and friend Josh Miller.

Anchor Ybeth Bruzual said: “This is a profound loss on so many levels because it hits us on our doorstep, but there is a dead child, an injured mother, another colleague who is hospitalized.

“So please be patient as we also try to process the fact that our colleague will not be joining us. He is gone.

“His family is trying to figure things out. Dylan was so special. He died doing what he loved most – his job.’

Other tributes came from Florida politicians and the White House.

Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre tweeted, “Our hearts go out to the family of the journalist killed today and the injured crew member in Orange County, Fla., and to the entire Spectrum News team.”

Gov. Rick Scott tweeted: “This is absolutely awful.

“My team and I are closely monitoring the situation and keeping these Floridians and their families in our prayers.”

Police say Moses was not connected to either the reporters or the nine-year-old girl. He is also suspected of the first murder reported by Lyons and his colleague when they were struck, and is said to have known this woman, although her name is not yet known.

In 2021, Moses was arrested for possession of marijuana after police found him in a car with two other young men. As they approached the vehicle, one of them threw a gun out the window.

Moses had 4.6 grams of cannabis in his pocket and was on probation for juvenile delinquency at the time.

The men also had ski masks in their car and all previous arrests for gun crime and burglary.

But because of the small amount of marijuana that Moses was carrying at the time, he was never sentenced to prison, at best probation. It is unclear if police have charged any of the young men with possession of the stolen gun.

Moses’ previous crimes happened before he was 18, which prosecutors say prevents them from speaking out.

Prosecutors declined to discuss them Thursday morning when contacted by .
