French right attacks Constitutional Council over immigration law

The Supreme Court yesterday declared the total or partial unconstitutionality of 35 of the 86 articles that make up the law, since they violate fundamental rights of the foreign population, which have to do with issues such as social benefits, immigration quotas, family reunification criteria, etc., among others Access conditions for foreign students.

Most of the articles in question were included in the law in return for the parliamentary support of the government by LR and the far right, as the ruling party does not have a majority in the chamber, despite knowing that their content could make them outside the constitution. .

However, the right-wing leader attacked both the Council's actions as it “censored a large part of the immigration law on formal grounds” and the separation of powers, saying that it “deprives the French people of their sovereignty” since it is the law It was approved by the National Assembly.

Ciotti called the decision “scandalous” and accused the President of the Constitutional Council, Laurent Fabius, of “collusion” with the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, to “hinder the will of the French people, who want less immigration.”

In addition, it was Laurent Wauquiez, regional president and possible LR candidate for the 2027 presidential elections, who denounced “a coup against the rule of law” and demanded that Parliament have “the last word”, even after the veto of the Constitutional Council, in relation on immigration law.

Laurent Fabius, for his part, defended himself against the criticism, denied any political manipulation and pointed out that this was not his job, “but that of legal advice”.

He recalled that the Supreme Court is “not an echo chamber of public opinion or a chamber of appeal for the decisions of Parliament” and that its members are not “guided by public opinion” or polls, and that this is also the criticism of the Supreme Court The Court took into account the right, which declared that the judges “violated the will of the French” on immigration policy issues.
