The days of spontaneous vacations abroad are long gone.
From 2024, the European Union will require visitors to pre-authorize via the European Travel Information and Authorization System – and that includes summer jet-setters from the US.
Before vacationers can secure tickets, accommodation or a reservation for the trending hotspot you spotted on TikTok, vacationers must submit an ETIAS application for around $8.
Applicants must provide travel documents such as a passport, as well as personal information, education level, current occupation, anticipated travel details and any criminal convictions.
While most applications are processed within minutes, some take longer to reach a decision and the European Union recommends visitors to submit their application “well in advance”.
A response is promised within four days but may be extended by 14 to 30 days depending on the circumstances.
Once approved, however, it is valid for up to three years or until the visitor’s passport expires.

“With a valid ETIAS travel authorization, you can enter the territory of these European countries as often as you like for short-term stays – typically for up to 90 days in any 180-day period,” the EU website reads.
“However, it is no guarantee of entry. Upon arrival, a border guard will ask you to present your passport and other documents and verify that you meet the entry requirements.”
The travel permit is only required for entry into 30 European countries including Spain, Germany, France and Greece – sorry Mama Mia! fans.
Although the plan is expected to be implemented next year, experts are unsure if it will actually happen.Getty Images/iStockphoto Travelers must be approved before traveling to 30 European countries.Schengen visa info
Although it was announced that the requirement would come into effect in January 2024, experts doubt that it will actually be implemented then, as there have already been several delays.
Peter Greenberg, travel editor at CBS News, said that “there is nothing stopping the US from introducing its own visa fee and application process.”
“It’s not going to be complicated, it’s just annoying,” he said, according to CBS News. “Most Americans, in fact all Americans, are not used to doing this to travel to Europe, so there will be many surprises at the gates if passengers are denied boarding in the first few weeks when this goes into effect.”
