Gas storage in Austria 40% full

According to the current Austrian Grid Management AG (AGGM) management report, the supply of domestic gas is “guaranteed without restrictions”. The price situation in the markets is “currently more volatile again and yesterday it was 130 euros/MWh”. The AGGM writes about the state of memory: “Memory will continue to fill, but to a lesser extent than last week.

Austria’s gas storage facilities are currently 40.2% full, in Germany it is 56.3% and the EU average is 52.4%. This emerges from the AGSI storage companies interest group figures from the day before yesterday. The Czech Republic has up to 70.5 percent, while Hungary has just 36.5 percent. However, in an EU comparison, Austria has relatively high gas storage capacities, which roughly correspond to a full year’s consumption.

Storage facilities in non-EU England are 94% full. Things are very different in Sweden, with just 11.3%.

The chronological table of the storage level in the “Eastern Grid Distribution Area”, relevant for Austria, is interesting: in April 2021, the level was almost 30% of the possible, and then it rose to almost 80% in October 2021. Since then, things have worsened markedly, until a trend reversal occurred in mid-April and storage levels rose to around 55%, according to today’s AGGM figures.

Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) pointed out that less gas came from Russia again on Friday. OMV announced that it would be able to purchase gas on the spot market if necessary.
