KANSAS CITY — In a move that has been brewing for several weeks, the royals designated Hunter Dozier for action Monday afternoon and brought infielder Nicky Lopez back from his rehab assignment.

Given the Royals’ focus on youth in 2023 and their desire to value the young talent they have in the squad, the 31-year-old Dozier blocked a squad spot and playing time, even if those opportunities have waned in recent weeks. After Lopez returned from appendicitis, the Royals needed a way to keep versatile infielder and 23-year-old Maikel Garcia in the roster.

“That was definitely part of it,” said Royals general manager JJ Picollo. “When Maikel was performing when Nicky got hurt, it gave Maikel an opportunity to play. We like what we see of him. We know we like him defensively. Now that Nicky came back, it forced our decision. These two are certainly part of our work.”

Dozier, the Royals’ first-round pick (No. 8 overall) by Stephen F. Austin in 2013, had his best season in 2019 when he had a WAR of 2.8 according to FanGraphs and hit 26 home runs during he .279/ .348/.522.

Since then, there has been a steady decline for the Dallas native, who has posted a -2.3 fWAR and a .670 OPS over the past three seasons. Dozier, who had just completed his overtime in spring 2021, suffered a thumb injury in the first game of the season and was never able to fully regain his momentum. In 2021 he achieved a WRC+ of 81 with a strikeout rate of 28.4% and in 2022 he achieved a WRC+ of 90 – well below the 100 league average mark.

The Royals hoped the 2019 Dozier would return in 2023 as an experienced leader in a clubhouse full of young batsmen. His contract was not huge and could be justified with the average performance in the league for a newly developing club.

“That’s hard to answer,” Piccollo said when asked about Dozier’s offensive regression since 2019. “If we had known that, I think we could have addressed it and fixed it.” You get into a little mental game. It’s difficult to say.”

Dozier spent the final season break honing his momentum and showing progress in spring training, working with the Royals, beating coaches and securing the third base job on opening day as that’s where he got to see most of the game time.

“This game is really difficult,” said Royals manager Matt Quatraro. “Especially the punch aspect.”

Rather than continuing the traction he enjoyed in the spring, Dozier held a 31.9% lead and posted a 50 wRC+ in 29 games. The Royals have opted to use Garcia more often in the hot corner now and Lopez will continue to get playing time there as well.

Dozier’s seven-year tenure with the Royals — during which he hit .238/.305/.420 with 73 home runs — is likely over. He will make waivers over the next week to give another team a chance to take over his contract. Otherwise, the royals will be responsible for collecting the remaining $16.75 million due to him.

“With the support of the owners, we were able to make that decision and move on,” said Picollo. “We just have to be excited about what happens in the coming years.”

Even if the Dozier extension didn’t work out as either side had hoped, Picollo noted that the club would not be dissuaded from trying to bring young players up front if the organization felt it could do so is in the best interest of the club.

“I think we would be wrong if we said that we will not try to renew players,” said Picollo. “I think it always has to be part of our everyday discussions.”

While first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino’s name has surfaced as a possible extension candidate, Picollo stressed that any extension talks involving Pasquantino or any other player would remain confidential.

Robert Falkoff contributed to this report.

Lopez started at third base Monday after missing 20 games with appendicitis. The return was bittersweet for Lopez due to his close relationship with Dozier.

“He’s my closest friend on the team,” Lopez said of Dozier. “Maybe that’ll happen on his journey and it’s kind of a fresh start. I’m always there for him. I know he will be fine.”
