As some National Hockey League (NHL) teams consider a change of guard behind the bench in the coming months, they could turn to former Montreal Canadiens assistant and veteran coach Gerard Gallant, who is just waiting for a call.
The Prince Edward Island native was released by the New York Rangers following their first-round exit in the 2023 playoffs and appears to be tired of watching games on television and wants to resume his career. Some teams, including the New York Islanders, who replaced Lane Lambert with Patrick Roy on Saturday, decided to make a move in hopes of experiencing more fruitful times, and that's a reason for Gallant to continue to hope for another chance.

With 705 regular season games and a Jack Adams Trophy under his belt, the former forward believes he has a lot to offer the organization that seeks his services.
“I'm waiting and keeping my fingers crossed that there will be something for me. I would like to coach in the NHL again, but we'll see. I haven't spoken to anyone and I'm not expecting a call. But when the phone rings, I’m very happy,” he said in an interview with NHL.com.
Family
Until he receives a potential mandate in the Bettman circuit, the man who first held the position of head coach in the NHL in 2003-2004 (with the Columbus Blue Jackets) will experience valuable moments.
“I think people know I’m available. I am only 60 years old. They know I want to coach again. So if the opportunity comes, I will be happy. […] I have no idea what’s going to happen, but I’m enjoying time with the family at home.”
“I wasn't the best [père] with my kids because I played in the NHL and didn't spend much time with them. But with my four grandchildren it is very pleasant, there is no doubt about that,” he also emphasized.
Gallant served a total of two seasons as an assistant with the Habs, in 2013 and 2014. He also led the Vegas Golden Knights to a Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2017-2018.
