A couple from the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand are suing their only child and wife for failing to give him grandchildren after six years of marriage. If nothing changes within a year, they are demanding compensation of 50 million rupees (more than 615,000 euros).reports the Times of India.
The parents, Sanjeev and Sadhana Prasad Sinha, justify their decision by saying that they are spending 3.5 million rupees (more than 40,000 euros) for their son’s education in the USA, in particular the pilot course. “We want a grandson or granddaughter within a year or so as compensation for having spent my life’s savings on my son’s education,” argues the father, Sanjeev Prasad Sinha, 61.
Sanjeev and Sadhana add that they supported their son for more than two years after he trained as a pilot and returned to the country. Other declared expenses include almost 80,000 euros for a car, a wedding in a fivestar hotel and a honeymoon in Thailand.
Overall, the expenditure is half of the amount now requested: more than 310,000 euros. “We killed our dreams to create them”, the couple sighs, quoted by local newspapers. For him, the absence of grandchildren makes them more vulnerable to “provocations from society”. It is “mental torture,” concludes the mother, Sadhana Prasad Sinha, 57.
The couple’s lawyer, Arvind Kumar Srivastava, justifies the trial with the same arguments, calling it “spiritual cruelty”. “She [os pais] are heartbroken at the thought of dying without having a grandchild,” he adds, quoted by The National.
The couple filed a lawsuit against their son and daughterinlaw in the Haridwar court and a first hearing is scheduled for this Tuesday 17 May.
