Italy agreed to expand the humanitarian corridor from Libya

According to a notice published this Thursday on the official website of this ministry, the document signed the day before at the headquarters of this organization envisages increasing the number of immigrants allowed to receive during a period of three years from 1,000 to 1,500

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as the National Institute for the Promotion of the Health of Migrant Populations (INMP) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) are also involved in this agreement.

The Christian organization Community of Sant'Egidio as well as the Federation of Evangelical Churches and the Association for Social Promotion (ARCI) are also taking part in the initiative, the source says.

The protocol provides for the transfer to Italian territory of people forced to flee their country due to war and violence and temporarily staying in Libya, including children, women who are victims of human trafficking, those who have been tortured and the seriously ill.

Of the 1,500 people who will arrive in Italy from this North African country, 600 will be transferred to facilities of the Integration Reception System (SAI) financed by the Ministry of the Interior, while 900 will be accommodated in centers managed by the above-mentioned associations.

The Community of Sant'Egidio will receive 400, another 300 will be housed in ARCI facilities and the remaining 200 will be cared for by the Federation of Evangelical Churches, the text says.

Laura Lega, Head of the Civil Liberties and Immigration Department at the Ministry of Interior, stressed the importance of this type of cooperation with civil society associations to promote and implement legal immigration channels, combat arrivals via irregular routes and fight human traffickers.
