2001 Fukushima tsunami
TOKYO, June 18 (RHC) – Japan’s Supreme Court ruled Friday in a ruling that the government is not responsible for the harm done to victims of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, which was caused by a tsunami in March 2011 were caused.
This is the first time a unified national responsibility ruling has been issued on the issue, and it is expected to affect similar processes across the country.
The judiciary believed the tsunami was “larger than expected” and that even if the state had directed the plant’s operator – Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) – to take the necessary action, “it is very likely.” that the accident was inevitable”, gather local media.
The decision relates to four class-action lawsuits filed against the state and TEPCO by residents who evacuated Fukushima Prefecture after the accident.
As for TEPCO, last March the Supreme Court confirmed its responsibility for the disaster and issued an order paying over 1,400 million yen (about $10.3 million) in damages to about 3,700 victims. (Source/RT)
