The 52-year-old needs no introduction to the world of professional golf. A winner of 17 tournaments on the PGA Tour, he is also the architect of five American conquests in this prestigious competition, in which he has competed seven times.
On three occasions, Furyk crossed swords with the Canadian on the aisles. He has a record of two wins, including one in singles in 2003, and one loss.
“We’ve been good friends for over 20 years. We won our two big titles in quick succession in 2003. Like him, I’m intense. It will be a good duel between the captains because we have similar strengths and like to control our game,” Furyk said in a telephone interview with the Journal.
The shadow of 2018
Despite being a fixture in team competitions for nearly 25 years, the American has never assumed the responsibility of captaining the Presidents Cup. In Korea 2015 and New Jersey 2017 he assisted captains Jay Haas and Steve Stricker respectively.
Despite an outstanding competitive record of 20 wins, 10 losses and three career ties at the biannual event, Furyk carries a burden. The revenge for the defeat at the Ryder Cup 2018 in France. He then acted as the big boss of the American team.
Solid and combined experience with youth at Le National golf club, things went haywire on the second day of competition. The bickering had eroded the team spirit and Captain Furyk’s decisions had been harshly criticized. The European formation then prevailed at 17.5 to 10.5 despite the presence of large American guns.
“It’s an honor to have been chosen to lead the American team in Montreal,” said Furyk. I have excellent relationships with the players. I know them well for the most part, but I’ll get to know the new ones that might find their way into our lineup.
Good memories from Montreal
Furyk has officially landed at Royal Montreal three times in his career. In addition to his participation in the 2007 edition of the Presidents Cup, where he had a record three wins and two losses in the American win of 19.5 to 14.5, he finished second at the 2014 Canadian Open by blowing away a three -Hub lead. In 1997 he missed the ax despite an excellent opening round of 66. He followed up with an overwhelming 80.
“It’s a place where I have a lot of unforgettable memories,” he said, noting the American win in 2007. This place is perfect for the type of matchplay games. Canadian golf fans will create an incredible atmosphere.”
