The drama between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard continues. Following the 2020 ruling that dismissed Depp’s lawsuit against The Sun over being labeled a “beater,” the Pirates of the Caribbean actor is back in court, this time for suing Heard for defamation (which prompted her to sue against it 100 million dollars). Unfortunately for Depp, his case took a major hit due to the firing of a key witness.
As reported by Insider, Georgina Deuters, the wife of Stephen Deuters (one of Depp’s employees and associates), was called to the witness stand by Depp’s legal team on the third day of testimony in the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial. However, while Deuters was reminiscing about past events, she was released from the witness stand, and Heard’s attorneys met with Judge Penney Azcarate. After the jury was released from the room, Azcarate, who is presiding over this trial in Fairfax County, Virginia, asked Deuters if she watched any trial before testifying. Deuters responded that she had seen some “clips of it online,” and from there, Azcarate said she could leave the courthouse and directed Deuters’ testimony to be removed from the record.
Before she was fired from the booth, Georgina Deuters opened up about things like her husband’s encounter with Johnny Depp, the time she spent with Amber Heard when she was dating Depp (she described the Aquaman actress as “very charming” at the time ) and how Depp is doing In her opinion, alcohol and drug use never led to a major personality change. However, due to Deuters’s dismissal, the jury is not allowed to consider her statements during deliberations.
For those who weren’t paying much attention to the legal mess between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, Heard wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post back in 2018, in which she discussed being a domestic violence survivor. Though the actress didn’t mention names in the play, Depp felt she was talking about her marriage to him. This formed the basis of the defamation lawsuit he filed in early 2019, alleging that Heard’s words caused Disney to remove Depp as Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean film series.
Johnny Depp’s libel trial against Amber Heard began earlier this week with jury selection, which included quizzes on both actors’ careers. Shortly thereafter, both legal teams delivered their opening statements, with Depp’s team targeting Heard’s credibility and Heard’s team insisting that their comment was not about Depp and that Disney’s decision to part ways with him was of their own accord. Isaac Baruch, a childhood friend of Depp’s, is among other witnesses who have taken the stand and say that while he is on Depp’s side, he is also fed up with what has happened over the past “six years” has happened.
There’s still a long way to go before the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial is complete, and the rumor that Heard was almost replaced as Mera in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom could be aired even during the trial. Keep visiting CinemaBlend for more updates on this event.
