Katy Perry posted a lively tribute to one of her managers of the last 20 years and mentor, Martin Kirkup, on Instagram. The 75-year-old died suddenly on February 4th while vacationing in Hawaii. The cause of death was not disclosed.
“It took me a while to write this post… something about posting it makes it all seem final… and even though Martin wasn't particularly fond of social media and its sensationalism, I respectfully need to take a moment and talk about how special he is,” writes the 39-year-old artist.
In her lengthy tribute message, the singer and mother of little Daisy lovingly describes her friend and manager as a bulldog, one of her protectors and a man who celebrates the stubborn woman she is.
“Martin and all of my managers literally fought day after day for my voice to be heard,” writes Katy Perry, who says she has climbed wonderful professional mountains with her missing manager.
The singer of the song Firework was able to let him hear some of his new music material three days before his death. She says she's glad she had this final moment to make him proud of her.
“I will remain open and never forget the love, devotion and protection he has given me all these years. What an honor it was to have Martin Kirkup on my team,” she adds.
Earlier this week, Katy Perry announced on the talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live that she was leaving American Idol after seven years as a judge.
