King Charles III, 75 years old, was admitted to the London Clinic Hospital this Friday (26) for prostate surgery. According to Buckingham Palace, it is a “corrective procedure” to treat an enlarged prostate.
“The King checked himself into a London hospital this morning for scheduled treatment. His Majesty would like to thank everyone who has sent their good news over the last week and is pleased that his diagnosis is having a positive impact on raising public health,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
Buckingham Palace has not said how long King Charles will remain in hospital, but his next official appointments have been postponed to allow for a short recovery period.
The operation had already been planned and was announced by Buckingham Palace last week. The statement also said that Charles suffers from a benign condition that is common in men over the age of 50.
Charles' wife, Queen Camilla, said before the procedure that Charles was “doing well and looking forward to returning to work.”
It is not customary for the royal family to reveal details of illnesses and consider all medical matters a private matter, but King Charles was keen to reveal details of his illness to encourage other men experiencing symptoms to make a doctor's appointment.
England's National Health Service (NHS) says the number of visits to its website offering advice on prostate enlargement has increased by 1,000% since Charles' diagnosis was revealed.
