Last day of campaigning in Ecuador

Quito, February 2nd (Prensa Latina) The election campaign in Ecuador ahead of next Sunday February 5th’s general elections ends today and some candidates will complete their proselytizing period that day.

A group of applicants used Wednesday night to host big, massive acts with music and guest artists, but others preferred to use up to the last minute to draw voters.

As of Friday, there will be electoral silence throughout Ecuador and therefore the dissemination of any type of information or advertising that induces voters to adopt positions or preferences is prohibited.

Also, according to the regulations, no rallies, gatherings or other types of polling activities may be held.

On the other hand, the National Electoral Council announced that before the day of the elections this Thursday and Friday, 5,497 people deprived of their liberty without executed sentence will be able to vote.

A total of more than 13 million Ecuadorians are called upon to elect the 23 prefects and vice-prefects, 221 mayors, 864 city and 443 district councilors and 4,109 members of the municipal councils.

On this election date, the Left, and in particular the Citizens’ Revolutionary Movement, which has allied itself with former President Rafael Correa, is trying to consolidate and gain new spaces in areas such as Pichincha and ManabĂ.

The seven members of the Council for Civic Participation and Social Control will also decide and answer the questions of the Lasso government’s proposed referendum, which was rejected by various sectors including indigenous people, farmers, teachers and students.
