A professor at New York’s Stony Brook University has come under fire for branding two Suffolk County police officers “murderers” after they shot dead a man who stabbed them while they were responding to a phone call.
Professor Anna Hayward, who teaches at Stony Brook’s School of Social Welfare, questioned why the situation couldn’t be de-escalated and why the man had to die in an Instagram post.
Suffolk County officials had been called to investigate reports that the man was threatening his roommate with a fire extinguisher when the suspect suddenly pointed his knife at officers.
Three police officers were injured, two seriously, one suffered life-threatening neck wounds.

In an Instagram post, Professor Anna Hayward questioned why the situation could not be de-escalated and why the man had to die
It saw one of the officers shoot the suspect dead in self-defense during last Wednesday’s incident in Medford, Long Island.
But Professor Hayward seemed outraged and questioned her actions, writing: “This was a wellness check – why didn’t they de-escalate the situation? Why did a man have to die?’
‘What about the man they murdered?’ She posted in a follow-up comment
Hayward, who appears to have deleted all of her social media pages, posted an update online regarding the officer’s condition, accusing her of failing to de-escalate the situation.
Her comments were later removed from the platform, according to the New York Post.
Lou Civello, vice president of the Suffolk County Police Department’s Benevolent Association, called Hayward’s comments “beyond the pale” and called on the university to denounce them and end the “harmful anti-police bias” in their program.

“While a Suffolk County police officer fights for his life after being stabbed in the neck, an anti-police professor slanderously labeled him and his partner as murderers,” Civello told the Post.
“Professor Dr. Anna Hayward of Stony Brook University showed an astounding level of ignorance when she bluntly commented on the official Stony Brook page, where she denounced the police and condemned the actions of these hero police officers who stopped an armed criminal and others saved damage.”
Civello also said before Hayward deactivated her Twitter account, there were a number of anti-law enforcement posts, including calls to “disappoint the police.”
Stony Brook University officials released a statement saying they “fully support our police officers and their courage in protecting our communities.”
