Sony, the publisher who handles the rights to Nelly Furtado and the other foreign authors of the song “Say it right,” had the song “Lovezinho” taken off the air. Rio de Janeiro singer Treyce’s track uses a snippet of the Canadian artist’s music.
José Diamantino, legal director of Sony publishing house in Brazil, confirmed this g1 this Wednesday (3) that the parties did not reach an agreement and the song therefore came from all the official streaming platforms of the singer Treyce such as YouTube and Spotify.
“Feeling that time is passing without serious talks, the editors of the original work performed the takedwon (fall) with the help of the platforms,” Diamantino said.
Say It Right was written by Nelly Furtado and US producers Timbaland and Danja.
Editora is the company that takes care of the artist’s copyright. When he registers a song, he chooses a publisher who takes care of those rights. The company begins negotiating the use of the work on behalf of the artist, usually with their consent.
O g1 doubts whether the revocation was made with the knowledge of Nelly Furtado and the other foreign authors. José Diamantino replied: “Yes, everything with permission from abroad”.
❤️🕵️ Understand the order (of facts) of ‘Lovezinho’:
- 📝 In July 2022, producer WK from Rio de Janeiro created an arrocha with the melody of “Say it right” by Nelly Furtado in the chorus.
- 🎤 He called Treyce to finish and record “Lovezinho”. But it didn’t burst immediately.
- 🕺 In early 2023, the track became a phenomenon thanks to a video by dancer Xurrasco.
- 👱♀️ 👱🏽♂️ Treyce and Xurrasco performed at Carnaval (and even found out they studied at the same college in Bangu, Rio, but had never spoken to each other).
- 📧 After the carnival, the notification from Nelly Furtado’s publishing house reached the Brazilians. The musicians began negotiating a copyright split.
- 🚫 Two months later, without an agreement being reached, the publisher who handles the copyright of “Sag es correctly” ordered the song to be removed.
“Lovezinho” became a hit after a viral video by dancer and influencer Xurrasco. The song was released by carioca singer Treyce in 2022. The composition is her together with the producer WK.
O g1 searched for editors of “Lovezinho”, but they still did not give an answer until the last update of this text.
Compare ‘Lovezinho’ and ‘Say it right’
Say It Right was released on the album Loose (2006), a successful turning point in Nelly Furtado’s career. She threw herself into R&B and danceable rhythms with Timbaland’s signature beat. This CD features the only two songs of their career to hit #1 on Billboard: “Say It Right” and “Promiscuous”.
Treyce is 17 years old and was already successful in Rio with the songs “Vai malvadin” and “Me chama de amor”. They also use other melodies, without mentioning them from “Malvadão 3” by Xamã and “Nothin’ on you” by Bruno Mars. The first national hit came with “Lovezinho”.
