The Swiss tourist, who was working as a volunteer for the Chiang Dao Wildlife Foundation, decided to cut off his arm because the bear wouldn't let go and its teeth dug deeper into his flesh.
The drama began when the Swiss man, identified as Stefan Claudio Specogna, reached into the bear's enclosure with his right hand to put food on the tray. But instead of just eating the food, the animal bit the man and wouldn't let go of his arm.
Fearing for his life, Stefan Claudio, who was carrying a pocket knife in a pocket of his shorts, used the blade to cut his member below the elbow, freeing himself from the torment, according to the Bangkok Post.

The Swiss man was taken to a public hospital in Chiang Dao and later transferred to a private ward in Chiang Mai, where he underwent surgery.
The severed arm would have been recovered, but it is unknown whether doctors will be able to implant it again. According to Pattaya News, the animal has been in the care of the Chiang Dao Wildlife Foundation since 1993.
