It might seem that Hungarian András Arató, 76, isn’t very happy with his choice of São Paulo as a travel destination, but that doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. That’s because he’s been known for the nervous laughing meme since 2011, following a series of photos in which he appears to be forcing a smile.

Arató, who introduces himself on social media as “Hide the Pain Harold” (something like Harold hiding the pain), has posted photos of his walks in the capital, São Paulo. For example, this Friday (17) he visited the Liberdade neighborhood.

He had previously driven through Ibirapuera Park, visited Pacaembu Stadium and had a beer in an unfamiliar bar. “Difficult days in São Paulo,” he joked in the caption.

An electrical engineer by training, the Hungarian rose to fame in 2011, according to website Know Your Meme, when photos he took for an image bank began circulating the internet. In it, Arató appears in several situations, but what caught the internet’s attention the most was that his smile seemed to contradict the look in his eyes and, like Memes, went viral.

Arató surfed the wave and began attending events and TV programs, even doing a TedxTalk about his story. Despite the seemingly sad face, the Hungarian says it has nothing to do with him. “I actually think I’m pretty lucky,” he said in a 2019 interview with British newspaper The Guardian.
