Michigan has its man.
Two days after Jim Harbaugh left for the NFL to lead the Los Angeles Chargers, the national champion Wolverines promoted offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Sherrone Moore to head coach, the school announced Friday.
Moore went undefeated in the four games in which he replaced Harbaugh last season. Now he's replacing him as Michigan's full-time head coach.
“I have prepared my entire coaching career for this opportunity and can think of no better place to be a head coach than the University of Michigan,” Moore said in a prepared statement. “As a TEAM, we will do everything we can every day to continue the legacy of championship football that has been played in Michigan for 144 years.”
The same day Harbaugh took the Chargers head coaching job, Michigan All-America guard Zak Zinter tweeted: “No interviews necessary. It’s Papa Moore’s time.”
And now it's officially here.
“Sherrone has proven to be a great leader for our football program, particularly the offensive line and players on the offensive side of the football,” said Warde Manuel, Michigan’s athletics director. “He is a dynamic, ambitious and competitive individual who gets the best out of the players he manages. The players love playing for him and being in the building with him every day.”
Manuel added, “Sherrone stepped in this fall and served as interim head coach when the program and especially the team needed him. Sherrone handled this situation in a way that reaffirmed my already growing trust in him. He didn’t make it. “He was always about the team!”
