Mick Jagger on Harry Styles: “He doesn’t have a voice like mine or move on stage like me”

Harry Styles often finds himself at the center of comparisons to Mick Jagger, given their pride on stage and often choosing androgynous fashions, but the Rolling Stones legend told the Sunday Times that Styles bears only a “superficial resemblance to.” my younger self”. Not that Jagger has anything against Styles, a pop star he likes and has “an easy relationship” with. Styles just released his third studio album Harry’s House on May 20th.

“I like Harry – we have a casual relationship,” Jagger said. “I mean, I used to wear a lot more eye makeup than he did. Come on, I was way more androgynous. And he doesn’t have a voice like mine or move on stage like me; he only bears a superficial resemblance to my younger self, which is okay – it’s not his fault.”

Styles’ album Harry’s House received strong criticism from Variety’s Jem Aswad, who wrote that it was “very much a continuation and evolution of its predecessor.” That would be 2019’s “Fine Line,” which received critical acclaim and earned Styles a Grammy for the single “Watermelon Singer.” During Styles’ “Fine Line” era, the actor courted Jagger comparisons for his dancing on stage and colorful touring outfits.

“‘Harry’s House’ is a little more intimate and less stadium-sized than its predecessor,” writes Asward in his review. “Lyrically, it’s heavier and more serious in places – not surprising after all that’s happened in the two and a half years since ‘Fine Line’ went down just before the pandemic… After a peppy start with the horn-tipped ‘Music in a Sushi Restaurant'” and the ’80s-esque ‘Late Night Talking’ settles into an easy, leisurely groove, the album mixing moods and tempos but never getting too chilled: just as you sit back, a song like the effortlessly upbeat lead single ‘As It Was’ (which has topped the charts in several countries) breaks out like the sun after a summer rain.”

The Rolling Stones, meanwhile, embark on their Sixty Tour this summer. The tour kicks off on June 9th at Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium. Visit the Sunday Times website to read the band’s latest profile.
