Maheux, 53, appeared calmly and with a serious face via video conference from the Quebec detention center where he is being held.

“Yes, sir,” the second-degree murder defendant replied tersely when Judge Thomas Jacques addressed him to ensure he could listen to the proceedings.

The brief appearance of a few minutes revealed that some of the evidence had been passed on to the prosecution.

The prosecutor, Me Annik Harbour, undertook to communicate everything to Maheux's lawyer, Me Jessica Bernard, as soon as possible.

The case was adjourned to February 5 as it was still at the evidence disclosure stage.

Secret

The mystery surrounding the first murder of the year in Chaudière-Appalaches continues to linger.

The victim, Sylvio Champagne, was allegedly killed Sunday evening in his own apartment on 187th Street in Saint-Georges. When officers arrived, they discovered the man's lifeless body with serious injuries. The event was initially treated as a suspicious death.

The Sûreté du Québec said it would have no further comment as the matter is now before the courts. It is not known how, under what circumstances and for what reasons the man died.

Tony Maheux, who has no previous convictions and also lives in Saint-Georges, is said to have made rambling comments when he was arrested, so he was initially taken to hospital to have his health assessed.

“He screamed, 'I'm going to kill you all!' He was completely in crisis. They needed three patrolmen to check him and put him in the patrol car,” said a witness in an interview with Le Journal, saying he was woken up by muffled noises around 9:30 that evening.
