Elvis is an American pop culture icon, but it took an Australian filmmaker to add the sparkle needed to turn his life story and relationship with Colonel Tom Parker into a complete spectacle. No aspect of Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, the biopic starring Austin Butler in the title role, is subtle, and that’s the point. While not a biopic by definition, HBO’s The Princess is a meticulously researched, profound chronicle of Princess Diana’s life that is as captivating as it is devastating, and comes out just in time for the 25th (!) anniversary of her death. And if you want pure, hilarious escapism this weekend, popular Netflix sitcom Never Have I Ever returns for its third (and penultimate) season. The series, loosely based on the life of creator Mindy Kaling, is back, which means John McEnroe has one more year of voice acting.

New to Amazon Prime Video August 9: Elvis
A little less conversation, a little more focus on what’s on-demand this minute, please. Much has been written about Austin Butler’s outstanding performance as Elvis Aaron Presley in the Baz Luhrmann biopic of the original rock ‘n’ roll icon, and now that the film is available on-demand everywhere, you can see it for yourself. Luhrmann’s style is glitzy, over-the-top and oversaturated, just like Elvis’s, and the film is a rollicking celebration of the musician’s life combined with the darker side of his rise to fame, fueled by his con-manager Colonel Tom Parker, portrayed by Tom Hanks. who enjoys playing a villain for once.

New on Netflix August 12: I’ve Never Ever (Season 3)

We haven’t had a new episode of Never Have I Ever in a year and it’s been hard waiting so long to find out what’s new with Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), Ben (Jaren Lewison) and Paxton (Darren Barnet ) are. Not to mention how Aneesa (Megan Suri) fits into the show’s love triangle (um, is it a quadrilateral now that Aneesa is involved in?). Netflix will be releasing ten new episodes of Never Have I Ever on Friday so we can catch up with Devi and co (and don’t worry, there’ll be another season after this one too!).

New on HBO August 13: The Princess
HBO’s new documentary about Princess Diana, simply titled “The Princess,” is both a comment on the saturation of media coverage we are being inundated with and a look at the life of Diana, Princess of Wales. The film tells the story of Diana’s rise to fame, beginning with her first appearance in the public consciousness as a young friend of would-be king Charles, then as a beloved royal iconoclast, and then as a celebrity who couldn’t escape the glaring eye of the cameras. Told entirely as news footage with no added dialogue or interviews, the film is a heartbreaking, real-time look at the life and death of a woman who, for nearly two decades, was arguably the most famous person on earth.
