According to a key member of the creative team, the finale of the HBO series “Succession” will be 90 minutes long. In an interview Wednesday, the show’s Emmy-winner Nicholas Britell confirmed the rumored runtime to Variety.
“It’s 90 minutes,” Britell said. “It’s a huge episode — like a movie.”
The episode is directed by Succession Executive Producer Mark Mylod and will air on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, May 28th.
While little is known about what to expect, Variety previously reported in a cover story with HBO boss Casey Bloys that the network isn’t developing spinoffs.
Season 4 saw the big storyline of the death of patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox), followed by Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Kendall (Jeremy Strong), who became Waystar Royco’s “interim” co-CEOs, with Shiv (Sarah Snook) at it was involved in the decision-making process. Waystar Royco’s potential sale to Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård) looms ever closer, but provokes existential fears and family divisions among the Roy children as they assume what their lives will be like when the deal is finalized – if it is indeed comes about .
In terms of Emmys, the show ranks as the undisputed leader for Outstanding Drama Series — having won it twice — with Culkin and Strong among the favorites for Lead Actor. Snook is a first-time nominee for this year’s Primetime Emmys in the Leading Actress category. Cox’s placement has yet to be decided.
Britell — who won Original Title Theme Music in 2019 — will be eligible for Emmys consideration in Outstanding Music Composition For A Series (Original Dramatic Score). His work can also be heard on Disney+’s Andor.
“Succession” was created by Jesse Armstrong and first premiered in 2018. Also starring are Alan Ruck, Matthew Macfadyen, Nicholas Braun and J. Smith-Cameron. In addition to Armstrong, who also serves as showrunner, executive producers include Adam McKay, Frank Rich, Kevin Messick, Jane Tranter, Mark Mylod, Tony Roche, Scott Ferguson, Jon Brown, Lucy Prebble, Will Tracy and Will Ferrell.
