The collision occurred early Saturday morning around 1:30 a.m. as two police officers were traveling in a patrol car toward Schefferville.
According to the BEI, “a person was in front of the police cruiser and was struck by it.”
The victim was reportedly seriously injured before being taken to a nearby Local Community Services Center (CLSC), where he was pronounced dead.
No further details have been released at this time. Five BEI investigators have been assigned to determine the exact causes and circumstances of the incident. Founded in 2016, the organization's mission is to clarify the facts surrounding a police operation, especially in all cases in which a person other than an on-duty police officer loses their life.
Given the circumstances of this death, “the supportive services of a police force, namely the Service de Police de la Ville du Québec (SPVQ),” are necessary, police said.
