Open registration of candidates for the 2023 section elections in Ecuador

Duly registered political organizations today begin the candidacy phase for the next by-elections in Ecuador, scheduled for February 5, 2023.

The phase, which will last until September 20th, will allow the various stores to present their candidates for the positions at stake at these fairs.

These are 23 provincial prefects and vice prefects, 221 mayors, 864 city and 443 district councilors with their respective deputies and 4,109 members of the municipal councils.

Likewise, applicants will be presented for the positions of seven principal and alternate members of the Council for Civic Participation and Social Control, divided into three men and an equal number of women, and one representative of indigenous peoples and nationalities, Afro-Ecuadorian or Montubios and Ecuadorian im Abroad. .

“The National Electoral Council (CNE) calls for candidate registration to take place in an environment of peace and respect, and for political culture practices to affirm the democratic sense that distinguishes political organizations,” the institution said in a statement on the official call .

In this context, the President of the CNE, Diana Atamaint, invited all actors (political groups, civil society, academia and international cooperation) to contribute their voices and views to the consolidation of the process.

He assured that the company would provide guarantees of transparency, certainty and legal certainty in this and the remaining phases of the election process.

“The results will be the reflection and absolute respect for the votes recorded in the elections,” he stressed.

Each political shop must meet set requirements for candidacy, such as: B. 30 percent women and 25 percent adolescents.

The remaining phases leading up to Election Day comprise the campaign period, which is set for January 3 to February 2, 2023.

As a novelty, the CNE has included electoral debates in these elections, which will take place in 17 provinces and 21 cantons of the country.
