Osmar Prado spared no criticism of Globo when reflecting on his career. In an interview with Estadão published this Friday (23), the actor spoke about his differences with management, admitted that working with him was not easy and said that he had rejected two invitations to return to the channel. He also spoke about his new play and recalled the diagnosis when he was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2013.
During his 53year contract, the veteran left the station three times. He ended the agreement in October 2022, before the premiere of the remake of “Renascer,” a 1993 soap opera in which he played the legendary Tião Galinha. “I am a Carcamano, I have never experienced humiliation in my career and if you start a fight with me you must be aware that you will strike and be beaten,” he assured.
In the current version, the character is played by Irandhir Santos. Prado, in turn, explained the reason for rejecting an invitation from the channel to take part in the new conspiracy. “Tião is this Brazilian who works and starves but never loses the illusion that one day he will win the lottery. “Globo approached me for a role in the remake, but I immediately rejected it because of the theater and it would not be good to be close to Irandhir, it could prevent him from creating his Tião,” Prado said.
The remake wasn't the only job at Globo that the artist turned down. He also refused to be part of the soap opera “Guerreiros do Sol” on Globoplay because he could not reach a financial agreement. “A person I didn't even know called me to negotiate a salary over the phone and offered me less than I deserved. “I’ve never seen anything like this at Globo,” he revealed.

However, after a tenyear break, Osmar soon made his way to the stage when he was invited to star in “O Veneno do Teatro,” written by Spaniard Rodolf Sirera and directed by Eduardo Figueiredo. “It is a denunciation of this political and social system full of villains that we know very well. “Sirera created the piece in the 1970s as a criticism of the Franco dictatorship, but it could also be about the current conflicts in Palestine or Bolsonarism in Brazil,” he compared.
The actor also cited the context of the piece to express his opinion on Jair Bolsonaro's government. “The actor is always the most despised, but it is undeniably the most envied profession because, as a politician, he constantly transforms himself into characters to convince others to act on behalf of his interests,” he added. “O Veneno do Teatro” will premiere this Friday (23) at the Sesc Santana in São Paulo.
Prado also recalled the time he was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2013. After two operations, three sessions of chemotherapy and thirty more sessions of radiotherapy, he felt the fear of not acting again in the next few years. “Just before the operation I asked the doctor if there was a risk of my speech being affected because without it it would be over and he assured me that nothing would be affected,” he said.

For the new play, he practiced a series of exercises and made sure not to use the microphone on stage like most actors and actresses do today. “I find it frightening when I see actors with microphones. It seems as if the piece is not live, the lines are amplified by a loudspeaker,” he said. Before “O Veneno do Teatro” arrived in São Paulo, it passed through Belo Horizonte and Brasília. But Osmar wants a lot more on stage. “My dream is to race all over Brazil by the end of the year,” he concluded.
