It’s no big secret that Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ marriage was an unhappy one. So it’s no surprise that Diana reportedly had a crush on one of her A-list friends in the 1980s — George Michael in particular.

Now Michael was secretive at the time and Diana, not knowing this, was reportedly in love with him. Gavrin wrote, per People: “In attendance was England’s most respected rock star groupie, Princess Diana. According to the Daily Mirror, Diana admitted she found Michael “very adorable”. Michael issued a public response: “Thank you ma’am — you’re quite crushing.” Thus began the awkward 12-year friendship between a lovestruck aristocrat and a secret sex idol.”

Their bond grew stronger when Michael led their first annual Concert of Hope on World AIDS Day to raise money for HIV/AIDS prevention.

They remained close for over a decade, and he called her “my darling” in their last phone call before her death on August 31, 1997.

According to Gavin’s novel, Michael remained faithful to Diana and her children, William and Harry. In fact, he worked tirelessly on a wedding gift for William: “In 2011, nearly 14 years after Princess Diana’s death, Michael was working on a special gift for her son, Prince William, and his bride Kate Middleton ahead of their wedding on April 29 . It was partly to make up for the king’s once-denied childhood request.

The childhood request was that William wanted Michael to sing with Elton John at a Christmas party, but Michael declined at the time.

Michael died at his home on Christmas morning 2016 at the young age of 53.
