White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said during an interview with Pod Save America Thursday night, “We’re not sending President Biden to Ukraine,” specifically in the first person.

“No,” Psaki said, triggering laughter. “He is ready. He’s ready for anything. The man likes fast cars and planes. He is ready to go to Ukraine… We are not sending the President to Ukraine.”

Psaki told how British Prime Minister Boris Johnson secretly traveled to Ukraine last week, where he toured Kyiv with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“We should all maybe be relieved about that,” Psaki said when Biden didn’t leave. “He’s got a few other things to do… Yes, you’re welcome. Gladly, America. We need him for many things.”

“Who exactly is the *we* here sending the presidential seats?” asked Brent Scher of the Washington Free Beacon on Twitter.

“You know. Her,” Substack writer Joe Cunningham quipped in response.

In the past, Biden has suggested his political leaders call the shots for him, though it’s sometimes unclear if he’s simply shy.

Last month in Poland, Biden noted that “they won’t let me” go to Ukraine to see what’s happening on the ground. The reasons were probably safety concerns.

“I’m here in Poland to see the humanitarian crisis firsthand, and quite frankly, part of my disappointment is that I can’t see it firsthand like I can in other places,” Biden said at a briefing. “They understandably won’t let me cross the border and see what’s going on in Ukraine.”

“I’m supposed to stop and get out of the room,” Biden said in September after completing his prepared comments in the East Room of the White House.

At one point in August, when reporters began shouting questions at him, he remarked, “I’m not supposed to answer questions.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, you have given me a list here. The first person I was supposed to call was NBC’s Kelly O’Donnell,” Biden said at another conference this month.

“You guys are bad, I’m not supposed to answer all these questions, I’m supposed to go,” Biden said last May when reporters peppered him with questions about COVID-19.

Psaki’s appearance with her former Obama colleagues comes after reports she has agreed to join MSNBC once she leaves the White House. She is expected to host a show on the Peacock streaming service and also make guest appearances on MSNBC programs. Before joining the Biden team, she was a political commentator at CNN.
