the journalist Renee Silva was chosen as one of the leaders of the new generation [Next Generation Leaders] from Time magazine. The 2023 list with 10 names (see all below)was published this Tuesday morning (23).
The report sheds light on his role as the newspaper’s founder voice of communities at the age of 11 with the aim of discussing social issues and pointing out initiatives that deserve support, in the Complexo do Alemão in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro.
“The mainstream media has always portrayed the favela, but always in a very negative light. Every time I opened the newspaper, turned on the television, turned on the radio, I always saw the same thing that was being reported about favelas: violence, human trafficking, deaths, drugs. And I’ve never heard of other social problems. Or in relation to cultural and social projects,” Rene explained to “Time”.
“The goal is to change a negative and biased perspective that is perceived by residents of Rio’s communities and black populations,” he added.

Time notes that Rene is singled out as one of the main voices about Rio de Janeiro’s favelas, influencing the media in general. And that many young people participating in Voz das Comunidades produce content for mainstream media in Brazil, showing the importance of these areas to the city and country.
