The Main Event of the next Summerslam is officially set and Roman Reigns will face off against the same opponent who lost to him at Wrestlemania, Brock Lesnar, for the title.
During yesterday’s episode of SmackDown, which took place in Minneapolis, the former champion’s hometown, Brock Lesnar made a surprise return. Lesnar attacked Roman Reigns after successfully defending his title by defeating Riddle in the episode’s closing match.
After the show concluded, WWE announced that Reigns would defend his unified title against Lesnar on July 30 at Summerslam. The determination of the meeting was also specified, namely a Last Man Standing Match.
It’s obviously a rematch for Brock Lesnar: the unified title was born out of the reunion at WrestleMania 38 last April, a meeting that unified both Reigns’ universal title and Lesnar’s WWE title. As mentioned, Roman Reigns won out.
The long list of precedents between the two
“The Head of The Table” and “The Beast Incarnate” went head to head a total of eight times, including five singles matches, a couple of triple threat matches, and a fatal four-way. The first singles match came at WrestleMania 31 in 2015, however Seth Rollins redeemed his Money In The Bank contract by attending and winning the match. The second time Reigns and Lesnar faced each other was on the 2016 edition of Fastlane, where they fought alongside Dean Ambrose (now Jon Moxley in AEW) in a triple threat match, which Lesnar won. “The Beast” then defended the WWE Title against Reigns, Braun Strowman and Samoa Joe at SummerSlam in 2017. At WrestleMania 34 in 2018, Lesnar defeated Reigns to retain the WWE Title. The two faced off again in the steel cage at The Greatest Royal Rumble 2018 in Saudi Arabia. Lesnar controversially won after throwing Reigns through the cage wall, which knocked me both out, with Lesnar’s back touching the ground before Reigns.
Roman Reigns continued his numerous previous clashes and prevailed at SummerSlam in 2018. Finally, there were two precedents last year, the one already mentioned at Wrestlemania and then again in Arabia at Crown Jewel; in both cases Roman Reigns prevailed.
