(CNN) – Russian forces launched a wave of drone strikes against the Ukrainian capital Kiev from multiple directions on Saturday morning, according to local authorities.
The attack involved a “record number” of drones, according to a Ukrainian Air Force statement. “The enemy fired a record number of Shahed-131/136 unmanned aerial vehicles over Ukraine,” the military statement said, adding that the main target of the drones was the country’s capital.
The Kyiv City Military Administration warned residents to seek shelter, saying: “A large number of enemy drones are entering Kiev from different directions! We urge you to remain sheltered in place until the alarm sounds.”
A CNN producer in the city heard loud explosions and repeated bangs as drones buzzed overhead.
Injured and affected houses
According to the city’s mayor, Vitalii Klitschko, at least two people were injured in Kiev’s Solomyanskyi district and received medical attention on site.
Several locations in Solomyanskyi district caught fire, including a residential building and other non-residential buildings, Klitschko said.
It added that the second floor of a five-story residential building in Solomyanskyi District was damaged and that debris from the downed drones fell on two residential buildings, one in Dniprovskyi District and the other in Holosiivskyi District.
In another statement, Serhii Popko, head of the Kyiv city military administration, reported a fire on the premises of a kindergarten after a drone was shot down in Solomyanskyi district.
According to the Department of Energy, 77 residential buildings and 120 businesses were left without power as a result of the attacks.
“On the morning of November 25th, a large-scale drone attack on the capital disrupted the power supply to an overhead line. As a result, 77 residential buildings and 120 facilities in the central part of the city failed.” They are investigating the causes. The restoration work is ongoing,” the ministry said.
