Russia on Friday suggests that Belarus – a country it has used as a springboard for its invasion of Ukraine – should be among nations offering future security guarantees for Kyiv.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made the remark after it was revealed last week that Ukraine is seeking concrete security guarantees during peace talks, including the promise of military support during any future conflict from the world’s “leading armies” in exchange for accepting a neutral one Status.
“At the request of the Ukrainian side, their neutral, non-aligned, non-nuclear status should be accompanied by security guarantees,” Lavrov said, according to Reuters on Friday.

“We suggested that the Republic of Belarus should, of course, be among such guarantee countries,” he added.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko on Thursday said he wanted his country to be part of the Russia-Ukraine peace talks, claiming that “there can be no negotiations without Belarus’ participation,” reports the Associated Press.
Belarus was also one of the countries yesterday to vote against a US-led proposal that would ultimately suspend Russia from the United Nations Human Rights Council.
