Sharon Stone was laughed at when she suggested a film about Barbie – TVA Nouvelles

Sharon Stone was rejected when she wanted to make a Barbie movie.

The actress recounted how in the mid-1990s, buoyed by her success in Basic Instinct, she suggested to studio bosses that a feature film about the iconic Mattel doll could be a success.

“I was laughed at in the studio when I proposed the Barbie idea in the 90s, despite the support of Mattel,” she commented in a post on the Instagram account of actress and producer America Ferrera, who shared her speech at the Critics Choice Awards last Sunday.

“How far we have come. Thank you ladies for your courage and perseverance,” the 65-year-old actress added.

Sharon Stone has previously spoken about her admiration for the film and for Margot Robbie, who played Barbie in the hit film.

When asked who she would play in a biopic, she replied to The Lady Gang Podcast journalist: “I love Margot Robbie. I love Margot Robbie, so she probably likes it too. She is so talented. When I saw her play Tonya Harding (in “I, Tonya,” 2017), I said to myself, “That’s you.”

Before Greta Gerwig's film starring (and producing) Margot Robbie, other Barbie projects faced studio skepticism.
